Hi LindyBill; Re: "It is interesting to look back and realize that we thought the Asian cultures were going to be the tough ones to westernize."

First of all, who's this "we"? I never thought that Asian cultures would be hard to westernize. It's always been my observation that the US, being a melting pot, tends to collect the most attractive pieces of the world's ethnic groups. Of course the result is more intrinsically attractive to the rest of the world than their native culture. The result is a creeping "cultural imperialism", just like what the Communists feared. The Moslems may have greater resistance to this imperialism, but the trends are obvious. Go look at what's happening in Iran. What's interesting is that the cultural decay of Moslems towards western values is obvious even to Osama bin Laden, but that you missed it entirely.

No, it wasn't "we" who thought that the Asians would be tough to westernize, it was you. And you are as wrong now about the Moslems as you were then about the Asians.

Nations that are fighting always exaggerate the differences between self and other. This is part of the natural human tendency to clump together into groups and fight against other clumps. This tendency distorts human beliefs about other humans. You need to self analyze exactly why you were wrong about the Asians and think deeply about this. Or you should simply admit that you don't have the ability to form realistic character appraisals of foreigners and leave it at that.
