I suspect there is a real difference between what the extremists teleguiding the bombers want, and what the average Palestinian wants. Look at it this way - Jenin was the absolute hotbed of terrorists, but what percentage of the population did Tsahal arrest during the fighting ? Nearly all the population took refuge with friends or relatives till it blew over.

At any rate, the experience of Algeria is still alive in the French consciousness, more so than Viet Nam here in the US.
