I have a problem with my modem (US Robotics 56K internal) that I can't fix.

My ISP is a dial-up and the starting sounds (scratching and pinging-ponging) are so loud that it has woke me up at night if my dialer kicks on then for some reason.

I tried properties|speaker volume control and set it to the lowest position, but it doesn't affect that initial sound at all. I stuffed some cotton on it, but that didn't help much at all.

Any ideas?
