Like with most other things you could probably come up with a plausible explanation for a high percentage of cases. We know that a certain number of heinous criminals had a crumby upbringing. Some were abused, some were neglected, some were spoiled, some had genetic tendencies, some were clinically deranged, some were normal but snapped one day into an episode of violence. In some cases we just have no explanation. What we also find is that other people who were dealt a similar hand in life chose different paths. They made the best of their struggles and rose above difficult circumstances.

I think it is noble to seek understanding. However, the tone of the comment seems more dismissive than seeking. Is there anyway that we can separate that from seeking a resolution? I agree that retribution is not part of it.
