"Life imprisonment and death are both useful in that they separate them from us. I don't know what is useful about serving five years. That doesn't solve the problem and may create additional ones. I'd like to see the whole system evaluated on the criterion of constructiveness."

ditto...although, I do see problems with life imprisonment being dealt as a useful or constructive remedy in some cases.
