I don't think starting over is necessary
re-evaluation is possible, and the pendulum doesn't need to swing to breakdown in order for things to get fixed
it may be as simple as economics
a recent study showed that advertisements following material with violence or sexual content were unlikely to be remembered (people are still thinking about the sex and or violence, and not paying attention to the ads). Therefore it may be that advertisers will demand blander less objectionable programs. I imagine people retain ads very well after a nature program on ants, for example.
