It would be a shame to devalue this sport by allowing any of the problems that came to yet another head in figure skating and the IOC in Salt Lake to continue in football.

I think it's necessary to use refs who have extensive international experience with teams from all over the world.

Even though FIFA rules are uniform, they are enforced in different manners and to different degrees on each of the continents. Players and teams in different regions also use different tactics to stretch or beat the rules.

When all these teams are mixed together in one tournament, some refs are simply not capable of handling the challenge.

Maybe the Italian situation will serve to trigger some action wrt this issue.

I think random selection of refs and linesmen just prior to each game is a great idea.

Video replays may also be beneficial, but certainly a controversial topic. They may serve, however, to prevent teams from winning or losing due to referee error or bias.

I still remember the famous punch that led to a big Argentinian goal years ago.
