All of what you say was - and some still is! - true about the USA. You have to remember, it shouldn't be a comparison between current EZ and current USA but a comparison between current EZ and 1790 USA.

And that early America was very fragile indeed, so fragile a horrible civil war lay in her future. It wasn't until after the civil war that people began to think of themselves as Americans first and - eg - Virginians second. Until then state was at least as important as the republic.

These things take time. To this day different states in the United States have their own independance days.

Longterm I am hopeful for the EZ.
