Windsock,

I was awarded options this year by my employer (large multi-national, not high tech).

In all honesty, options are not much of a motivator to me. The way our company structures the awards, I see them more as a perk. At my employer, options are awarded based on an employee's grade level, not on performance. The higher your grade level, the more options you get. Is that a motivator? Maybe for some. Not for me.

Realize that the system and reasons for awarding options will be different for different companies, small high tech start ups for instance. I'd be interested in hearing from you your perspective on the subject.

The real motivator for me is the annual increase in my base salary and the cash bonus I am awarded based on my performance, and that of my business unit.

I do know how options motivate me and I think I know how that might motivate others. In my company they are not directly related to individual or company performance.
