I think Pakistan backed off because Mushareff doesn't want nuclear war. I'm not so sure US influence was the decisive factor. The US had attempted to get Pakistan to crack down on the organizations operating against India in the past without success. But Indian nuclear blackmail worked - this time.

The US has not been a neutral figure in the Indo-Pakistani conflict. Historically, the US has backed Pakistan. We still have defence ties to Pakistan. But none to India.
