Brumar you are right in that historically US has had a military relationship with Pakistan. But since the end of the Cold war, that relationship was put in a freezer. During the Clinton years Pakistan was not all that favored in Washington. They have been trying to procure military hardware from the US and they have been repeatedly denied.

After Sept. 11 that relationship was somewhat revived, only the economic aid was not the military aid. On the other hand, when Bush came into office, he publicly declared that his administration saw India as their key ally in that region and proceeded to establish relationships with India.

Since then India and US have had joint military exercises etc. You may read it all here:

So I would still credit the US for the easing of tensions in the Ondo=Pak situation because they remained neutral and hence could join with Russia, China, UK and the EU in exerting the pressure on both the countries. Bush has been unable to do that in the case of Israel/Palestime because of the American-Jewish lobby. I credit the US for saving the lives in the Indo-Pak region. I also blame the American-Jewish lobby for all the lives that are being lost there, Jewish or Plestenian does not matter. If the American Jewish lobby lets Bush be Bush, he can surely get the warring parties together inspite on the suicide bombings. Right now they are fighting like barbarians in that regions: If you hit me then I will hit you back, is how they are doing things out there
