And the child's self-destructive behavior could have been caused by his father's impending death sentence. Over eating is escapism.. I think he could have dealt with his father in prison for life. Just by knowing he was "there". As evidenced by the prison visit with him early in the movie.

And the mother was just under too much pressure and she couldn't cope. Maybe she too, could have lived better, coped better with her son with a life sentence for her husband..

Well how about college level then? As I mentioned, I think the sex scenes are important.. It was far from gratuitous IMO.
