The branch of my family that has been longest in America is that of my paternal grandmother, whose maiden name was Wilbur. It was long known in the family that the Wilburs were long ago granted, by the grace of His Britannic Majesty, all the land between Saratoga Lake and the Hudson river, a fair bit, and also that they repaid this courtesy by revolting en masse when that became the fashion: to this day a musket carried by Joeb Wilbur in the battle of Saratoga is on display in a museum there. Some time ago one of the ancestors returned to England to uncover the circumstances surrounding the land grant, apparently hoping to discover that it was related to some distinguished act. What he discovered was that the Duke of Bedford had a butler, and the butler had a daughter, and the Duke had the daughter, and the daughter had a baby, and the Duchess had a fit, and the Duke found it expedient for the butler and his family to go to America. He arranged for the grant, and off went the problem. So I guess if you follow it back far enough we're all a bunch of bastards. Such is the nature of family trees....
