I believe you hit the nail on the head with this comment

For Dell to sell toner and inks, they [may] have to sell through retail stores, and this is a new area for Dell. Selling inks directly may not be very successful, as must people just run down to their local store when their ink cartridges run out of ink.

I added the "may" to your comment, but I do agree.

Since printers are "low margin" businesses, why not forget about selling "printers" and, instead, sell ink jet and toner cartridges over the internet?
