But I noticed time after time last fall, Sharon refraining from retaliating to terrorist acts for up to a week at a time or more. Seemed rather restrained to me.

"Restrained"? LOL! You are contorting the facts to fit your preconceived conclusion. In reality, Sharon panicked numerous times at the thought of peace. Example:

Ra'ed al-Karmi, was head of the Al-Aqsa Brigade, who was fighting the occupation. The Brigade considered his assassination a declaration of war, and launched a series of suicide bombings. A statement issued by Al-Aqsa Martyrs Troops Vows Revenge:

Israel's own briefing document notes the milestone at which the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades began targeting Israeli civilians within Israel:

"Following the death of local Tanzim [sic] leader Ra'ad Karmi on the 19th [sic :actually the 14th] of January 2002, the Fatah [sic] changed its modus operandi from shooting attacks on roads to suicide bombings in Israeli cities, and terrorist attacks against IDF checkpoints."

<<< Israeli Deputy Defence Minister Dalya Rabin, daughter of the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, admitted in an interview with the Israeli army that Al-Karmi's murder triggered the Khadera killings. "There was quiet for three weeks, and I believe the calm would have lasted longer if we hadn't assassinated Al- Karmi," she said. >>>
