The preacher/drunkard/fornicator err, trinity largely encompasses historical precedents and is often settled with traditional policies and practices. Naturally, in-laws only compound the situation. The dead man was Mrs. Bethel's uncle. Pastor Bethel referred to him as a "drunkard and a fornicator."
