I could use some thread help. My father-in-law, mid-60s, is absolutely useless at managing his portfolio. After two years of getting his ass handed to him, he has finally asked me for help.

My first suggestion is he could follow the bigger swings by moving in and out of the Rydex 2-banger funds on both up and down legs, but he has...conceptual difficulties...with this and wants a "normal" mutual funds.

Problem is, I haven't touched a mutual fund in years and don't have a clue as to the better ones. There are the morningstar rankings, but i'm not sure how much value to place on those.

if anyone has suggestions, i would love to hear them. I'm guessing smaller, well-run closed end fund might do him well...?
