The state is not trying to "uphold the sanctity of life", as if every life were sacrosanct. It is enforcing the prohibition on murder, by laying blame and administering a severe, but proportionate, punishment. It is saying that if one maliciously kills, one forfeits one's life, because one cannot be allowed to get away with it.........
