OK, I'm not going to come up with a replacement for our system of justice in an afternoon, but I've been noodling about and have a starter outline. This is a work in progress.

Outline of Objectives

regarding the crime in question
-the criminal
....accountability/conviction
....make amends
....rehabilitation
....protect society from future actions by this perp
-the victim
....made whole, receive reparations
....validate loss

regarding society at large

--deterrent for similarly situated prospective perps
--make statement of societal values

relevant instrumental values
--punishment fits the crime
--not profiting from the crime
--mercy and justice

You'll note that your overall goal is one of my instrumental values.
