Dave despite what you read, the central banks of the world are not united against gold, and they are not unlike everyone else; they won't be happy selling an appreciating asset cheap, unless there is a gain for them or their masters.
Gold will be jerked around, not by the central banks but by the bullion banks and big trading houses because they are trying to protect huge shorts and derivative positions. When these big traders try to move the gold market others use the stocks either to hedge the gold movement or profit by it.
However the die is cast. The markets are shaky and so are the fiat currencies. Gold is the one solid thing left to turn to. Big traders will play the volatility; and they will create volatility; that's how they make their money by shaking out the weaker players.
