"I want an open, aboveboard process where there is generalized agreement that the punishment fits the crime......"

A lot of people do. It aint happening, nor will it. How do you think we are doing? Are the criminals suffering exactly as it fits the crime they've committed? If that is true then the system works, they are suffering to the degree that will cause them to avoid repeat offenses. If you believe that you should visit your local county court rooms for a couple of days. Most of the men standing before the judge are in trouble for failing to appear (among other things). They failed to appear because they were incarcerated in another county during the time they were supposed to appear. The quote above is precisely the reason that our system does not work. Slapping someone's hand does not cause a change unless the slappee feels a loss in your disaproval.

I have tried my best to point out the problems with (punishment) when it comes to criminality, Now I see we are just falling back to the rhetoric "punishment fits the crime." If there is ever a punishment that fits the crime it occurs in the next life, IMO. It is a bad basis for human justice but you seem pretty stuck on it, so I will beg out at this point. I see no point in raising my voice to deaf people.
