Jim,
I guess your goal is to keep the "undesirables" out, but I am not sure if this should prevent terrorism, or if it should prevent the US from becoming a third world country, by importing the third world mentality into the US, to the point that it becomes predominant.
As far as terrorists are concerned, the whole immigration administration is so broken that until 9/11, one did not even need to be smart to outsmart them. Building a wall, or stationing troops is just a waste of money, if so many other avenues are open.
I am not sure how much the situation has improved since 9/11, but one thing is sure that the INS, bound by the idiotic Political Correctness, is making things just as inconvenient for a would be British nanny, as for a young Muslim/Arab terrorist.
On the third world culture, again, we have as many domestic sources for third world thinking (the mass "culture": media, schools, universities), as there are third world immigrants entering the US who possess these undesirable qualities. I think it would be useful if there was a someone who could spell out what it is that we are trying to prevent (domestically or through immigration) before we go on a spending spree building walls around the US.
