Our concern is not perfect justice, but the magistrate's responsibility to uphold approximate standards of justice, and the responsibility of the community to seek to conform itself to the requirements of justice. In other words, justice is an objective standard that, however, we can only approach in this world, but that we must seek if we are concerned with the right ordering of things. The meting out of retributive justice is, indeed, insufficient, which is why mercy is important, for example. I have already noted that strict justice might not yield the best result all things considered. But we balance justice against other things of value, we do not throw it out. My only point was to uphold its centrality, not to say that it is the exclusive consideration.......
