Avocent Announces Powerful New AMX Analog KVM Switching System for Controlling Multiple Servers
Industry Leader Raises Bar for Scalable KVM Switching and Server Control
biz.yahoo.com
HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 25, 2002--Avocent Corporation (NASDAQ/NM: AVCT), the leading global provider of KVM switching and network connectivity appliances, today announced an advanced analog matrix KVM switching system, AMX, that provides simpler access and easier manageability of servers in multi-rack, multi-platform environments. As a result, customers can easily reduce the installation time and expense of administering multiple servers. AMX features Avocent's exclusive AutoTuning® technology, enabling administrators to view crisp video displays of each connected server screen up to 1,000 feet away from the server. The AMX system can compensate for the variety of cabling that may be connected to the switch - CAT 5e, CAT 6 or patch panels - so that administrators benefit from superior video performance.

"The AMX system expands on the analog switching technology we first invented and introduced to the market more than a decade ago," said John R. Cooper, president and CEO of Avocent. "It demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering secure KVM systems that provide reliable access and control for IT managers who are responsible for multiple racks of servers."

"We've leveraged our experience in this market to not only improve the general architecture and design of our analog KVM switching systems, but we've also designed a feature-rich user interface that gives administrators what they need - a system that simplifies set-up and administration and provides superior video performance," said Gary Johnson, senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing.

Intuitive on-screen display and one-step upgrades

The AMX system includes an intuitive on-screen display and one-step upgrades, eliminating the need for administrators to upgrade each server individually. With AMX, network administrators can easily upgrade multiple server interfaces with only a few clicks of the mouse. The expandable architecture of the AMX system also easily accommodates future additions of servers since the system streamlines user profiles and system naming conventions.

AMX features complete system administration with the patented On-Screen Configuration and Activity Reporting (OSCAR®) management tool. OSCAR uses intuitive menus for point and click system configuration and server selection. Plus, for power users who require centralized system administration, the AMWorks tool can be used to create custom user profiles and multi-level security. An AMWorks CD is included free with each switch. With its CAT 5 based design and AutoTuning® capabilities, the AMX system eliminates complex cabling and delivers real-time, high bandwidth video with optimal 1220x768 resolution up to 1,000 feet away from the server.

Additional advanced features of the AMX include Avocent's unique AMIQ cabling. The AMIQ smart cable assigns and stores unique identifier codes and names for each attached server. This design prevents unauthorized configuration and access as a result of manipulating CAT 5 cabling.

The AM switching system consists of the following:

AMX5000

This 1U analog KVM matrix switch provides 32 server connections with support for eight users per switch. AMX transfers database updates throughout the system, not in just one direction. This ensures that the system is always "current" so that users have the same access rights, regardless of where they log on to the system.

AMIQ

An enhanced CAT 5 cable interface with built-in server identification memory and multi-level security. Each cable can be upgraded individually, eliminating the need for complex, time-consuming upgrades for each device. The AM system also features simultaneous flash upgrades, improving maintenance and ease of use.

AMX5100

The AMX5100 user station connects to the user's multi-platform peripherals and sends the KVM signals over an industry standard CAT 5 cable to the AMX5000 analog matrix switch. This CAT 5 connectivity and analog switching technology provide multi-user access and control to any server in the network. The AMX5100 automatically adjusts video compensation, providing users the benefit of optimized video quality every time a switch is made. There is no requirement to manually adjust the system.

AMWorks

This Java-based system administration tool supports customized user profiles and multi-level security, event logging and system status monitoring.
