Emerson to 'Power Protect' New 30-Story Office Complex In London's Canary Wharf Business District
New Heron Quays 2 to Serve as Lehman Brothers' European HQ
biz.yahoo.com
ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 25, 2002--Emerson (NYSE:EMR) has been awarded a major contract to "power protect" a new 30-story office building in the heart of London's prestigious Canary Wharf business district, it was announced today. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Emerson's electrical power protection system - delivered through Emerson Network Power and two of its subsidiaries, Liebert Hiross Ltd. and ASCO Power Technologies -- will provide the new Heron Quays 2 (HQ2) office building with state-of-the-art power reliability.

Heron Quays 2 is one of the tallest buildings in the Heron Quays district, standing at more than 500 feet tall, and covering one million square feet of space. Construction began in 2001 and will be ready for occupancy by global investment banking firm Lehman Brothers, the building's anchor tenant, next year.

"Power outages are not an option for investment companies like Lehman Brothers that depend heavily on their telecommunications and data networks," said Emerson President James G. Berges. "Emerson's contract for London's HQ2 high-rise demonstrates the global reputation it has built for providing reliable power. By bringing engineering and technology together to create solutions, Emerson provides both the products and services that get a critical job like this done."

Canary Wharf is among the world's largest commercial developments, and serves as the continental or global headquarters for many financial institutions and other corporations, which will employ about 100,000 workers. Canary Wharf also includes the UK's tallest building, One Canada Square, as the centerpiece.

Emerson will provide precision air conditioning for heat-sensitive network equipment, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, battery backup, and automatic transfer switches to fully synchronize electrical power throughout HQ2 to virtually eliminate the possibility of a power interruption.

"With increased electrical usage and a greater reliance on microprocessor-based technologies, all companies today are at higher risk of being affected by brownouts, blackouts, and other power disruptions caused by storms and cable cuts," said Industry Analyst Sara Bradford, of Frost & Sullivan.

"To prevent these incidents, companies have prepared themselves by implementing DC power systems, uninterruptible power supplies, (UPS) and power quality equipment," she added.

Bradford said the battery backup and UPS markets generated global revenues of nearly US$10.7 billion in 2001, despite the global economic downturn.

For the HQ2 building, Liebert Hiross Ltd. will install 75 high- precision air conditioning units, and a total of 12 UPS modules split into 3 separate UPS systems. ASCO Power Technologies is supplying 23 automatic transfer switches designed to protect the new office building's mission-critical network operations from shutting down due to an electric outage or power overloads.
