Prudential Upgrades AMD On Positive Comments About New Chip
By: Donna Fuscaldo, Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Prudential Securities analyst Hans Mosesmann raised his investment rating on Advanced Micro Devices Inc. to a buy from hold and upped his 12-month price target to $12 from $10 because of the stock's current valuation and positive feedback on its next generation microprocessor Opteron, formerly known as Hammer.

In a research report, the analyst said that recent feedback from a top tier personal-computer original equipment manufacturer is "surprisingly bullish" on the Opteron's performance. Furthermore, the analyst said that "industry contacts have also indicated that the Opteron processor is raising flags at Intel in terms of how the company will respond to this recent dynamic."

Although Mosesmann said he hasn't expected Opteron to move AMD's stock, given full production isn't expected until the end of 2002, he was surprised by the strong early feedback, which suggest that the company may be further along with its newest chip than he had anticipated.

As for AMD's current valuation, Mosesmann said he thinks the stock can return to the $10 range in the second half of 2002. It closed Monday at $8.70.
