I don't think it's going to cost a lot waiting for a meeting with the FDA - and indeed for what the European regulators have to say. It's a long shot, & the compound is probably dead, but it would be a little hasty for them to write it off before hearing in detail what the FDA might require. Further lengthy trials are certainly a no no.
