Interesting.... just received this in an email from my Argentinian friend who obviously takes pleasure in Beckenbauer's comments. ------------------ LONDON, June 25 (AFP) - German football legend Franz Beckenbauer insisted England would have reached the World Cup final if they had Germany's mental resolve, reports said Tuesday. Beckenbauer, a World Cup winner as both a player and a coach, told Tuesday's edition of the Daily Mirror tabloid that England lacked the willpower to overcome Brazil in their World Cup quarter-final clash on Friday. "If England had the mental strength of Germany they would be in the semi-final and be favourites to win the tournament," he said. "Some teams take failure and use it as a reason to come back stronger. "They build up again and use the memory to their advantage," the man known simply as the 'Kaiser' told the tabloid. "That is what Germany appear to have done," he said referring to how Germany were hammered 5-1 by England during the qualifying stages, only for the German side to bounce back to reach the World Cup final. "Other teams use failure as an excuse for more failure and it becomes a mental block," he added after England failed to overcome a 10-man Brazilian side.
