We aren't letting her off the hook. She is making reparations, whatever reparations are decided at her sentencing. She has to live with the fact that she killed someone. She has suffer disapproval via whatever social onus is placed on her. Maybe no one wants to buy real estate from her any more. Maybe the vet doesn't do everything he can to save her dog. That disapproval could penalize her in any number of ways.

One should be removed from society for a spell, to indicate the extent of disapproval, and one's unfitness to rejoin society without exacting a price for readmission......

Why does the price have to include removal from society for a spell? Why? Because we've always done it that way? Because your head is stuck in that box?
