The idea of imprisonment as a punishment for crimes is actually somewhat recent- -the last couple of centuries. Before that, punishment was more imaginative- -the stocks, whipping, dunking, hand amputation, banishment, and for more serious matters, death. "More serious" often covered a lot of crimes that now get prison time, such as theft.

And when you think about it, imprisonment does seem weird. Put all your bad guys in one place for a long time so they can teach each other. And have everybody else pay for their food, clothing, medical care, and housing. Punish the taxpayers.
