7:09AM Banks marketed deals to burnish energy co results-- WSJ : The Wall Street Journal reports that investigators are opening a new front in their inquiries into investment banks such as C and JPM for their role in developing controversial financing arrangements for energy co's; the banks arranged complex financing deals in recent years that boosted cash flow from operations, and these arrangements were pitched to and adopted by Enron, DYN, and possibly other energy concerns and had the effect of improving these cos' financial statements in a way that may have misled investors.

6:58AM Qwest: SEC taking tough stance on accounting -- WSJ (Q) 4.19: The WSJ reports that the SEC is taking a tough stance on how Qwest accounted for as much as $1.4 bln in sales of fiber-optic capacity and whether it was proper for the company to recognize the revenue right away.

6:46AM Martha Stewart probe widened to include possible obstruction of justice --WSJ (MSO) 13.60: The Wall Street Journal reports that federal prosecutors have widened their probe of Martha Stewart beyond insider trading to include possible obstruction of justice and making false statements. At issue is whether Stewart misled prosecutors in explaining why she sold ImClone shares. Adding pressure to situation is admission by a sales assistant of Stewart's broker that he initially misled Merrill Lynch's lawyers and the SEC.
