In a way you are right. Creator or no, hardly anyone pays attention to the fact that the Constitution does not grant rights but merely is a guarantor of pre-existing ones, free speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, right to self-protection, right to property etc. If the government was able to grant them then they could at some later date renege. Slipping the Creator into the mix was to me simply the obvious way to take away any doubt that it was not government or man that was "doing" anything.

The general social comment today is that we are interdependent not independent so I doubt much would be made of that change.
