I think the Harvard Business School concept gave it a lot of impetus. The group concept is now used in other disciplines though and much more prevalent. Women are more socially oriented. There's always an event. Not a month goes by my wife doesn't buy somebody a present. Then there's food. That's even more frequent. She's got to bring a salad for this or a desert for that. Guys aren't like that and academia has made groups a mainstay.
