Well, if you have your tonsils out, you will first sign a paper, or a bunch of them, telling you all the risks you are running by choosing the surgery. If the doctor doesn't get you to sign it, he or she can be sued if one of the complications occurs. By handing you those papers, the doctor is discussing a later possible suit with you and telling you you won't win it.
