My wife has a Compaq Presario laptop, P3 running Windows Me and IE 5. McAfee ViruScan came with the system.

About a week ago the PC started showing multiple blue "Windows error" screens upon boot-up, each with a different error message. Once booted, the PC was unstable, it would hang, and the PC would not shut down at all without pressing the power button.

It turns out that the last update for McAfee ViruScan, downloaded about a week ago, corrupted the entire program and made the PC unstable while it was running. VirusScan is now deactivated and I need to either uninstall and reinstall McAfee ViruScan, or remove it altogether and replace it with Norton Anti-Virus. Leaning toward NAV.

McAfee VS users should be wary of the most recent update. FYI
