I think that those arguments are a way to rationalize the conflict. Rather like the way that believers will assert that the 6 days in which God created the universe were not literal days--it's a way of reconciling two conflicting points of view in a peaceful way so that everyone can move on. I'm willing to go along with that to avoid a culture war on this at this time. I don't think it's a war we can win that particular war right now. I really wish the words had not been added in the first place, but since they're there...
