This is the crux of the problem, IMO. Folks have patriotism and religion so entangled in their minds, as in the ubiquitous prayer and Anthem before every football game, that the non-religious are assumed unpatriotic. Adding that language to the Pledge a half century ago was all about that melding. It sealed the knee-jerk connection between God and country for those who started school after the Pledge was amended. Persuading folks who don't already know better that they're two different things is futile.
