Religions have always focused on interpreting the words of the prophets with the basic premiss that God spoke to, or through, the prophets or in the case of Jesus, it's his disciples who have given us the interpretation. For centuries, people have met, debated, reinvented or reinterpreted the writings of the past to adapt outdated concepts into a more modern structure or to assimilate concepts from various factions into a unified set of ethics, laws and religious values.

In my opinion, the people in power today, who control the centralized religions of our modern world, don't appear to be all that worried about interpreting the words or the messages from the past. They are in the business of staying in power, keeping their monopolies and the enormous wealth associated with this power in tact.

The deception you wrote about, done in the name of Allah, Jesus, or numerous other entities, is what is causing many of the conflicts in this world. It is not the "true religion" but the wielding of power by the incumbents which causes these "unholy" decries. The elimination or murder of all non-believers is a perfect example of how one can wrongly "intepret the message" of the prophet(s) and unjustly use religion to commit crimes against one's neighbors or any other "enemies".
