In the case of the latter (fellowship) you become disassociated with your community if you violate the practice. This can be so devastating to some people that they would make the decision not to pay the cost just to be able to drive.

I imagine it's a horrid feeling--not unlike the feeling an atheist kid might have in a class where the Pledge of Allegiance was being said and he couldn't in conscience participate. There's a lot of pain outside the mainstream.
