I'm not a stock broker. If I were, I'd be all for people losing their hard-earning savings to swindlers like Bernard Ebbers.

No, you do not have it clear--putting a portion of SS payments into the present marketplace would not be a crime; however, it would be like giving your money to John Gotti (R.I.P.) Enterprises, Inc. (or his Executive VP's Bernard "Bernie the Phoneman" Ebbers, Dennis "the Tyco Psycho" Kozlowski, Kenneth "Easy" Lay, Gary Winnick, Arthur "Numbers" Andersen, and Sam "Martha's Boy Toy" Waksal).
