I don't know whether the comments attributed to Bush are true. He cannot even appear to be meddling in the Palestenian elections. Already he has lost credibility by siding with Israel. He also has to keep in mind that in 2 years time he has to run for re elections. And he surely does not want his fate to be decided by the outcome of the Palestenian elections. And this is how it could happen.

If his bark against Arafat is not heeded by the Palestenians, and Arafat ends up getting elected in January, then Bush would have to do something to save face in 2004, the year of his reelection. Now it is also possible that Arafat may loose. But better safe than sorry. And that means his advisors should tell him to shut up on this issue and wait for the outcome of the Palestenian elections. If Arafat looses, he gains. If Arafat wins, he still gains since he can claim that all he wanted was restoration of the democratic process in Palestine and proving to the Israelis that Arafat is a democratically elected leader with whom Israel should negotiate. A checkmate to the American Jewish voters.
