I had no problem putting a background in my profile using the standard html:

<BODY BACKGROUND="http://terrymeiners.com/images/80_LetsRoll.jpg"></BODY>

Try again and if it doesn't work leave the html in your profile and let me take a look at it. I should be able to tell you what you are doing wrong by looking at the source code.
