so you don't think it's even theoretically possible to set up a system to deal with crime centered on something other than retribution.
People can and do change. But not because and when the State wants them to. Retribrutation is at least reliable- -you actually can inflict the punishment promised.

So what do you think about parole for Leslie Van Houten?
Being weak-willed seems a rather strange argument for avoiding the consequences of ones behavior.
