Pearly:

To use a train, I have to:

-exit house
- get in car
drive to nearest station (roughly 15 minutes @ 120kmph)
-park car (IF there is parking room available)
-pay for car parking (in some locations only)
- get in line and pay for train ticket
- move to platform and wait for train (weather isn't always nice up here for this activity)
-enter train and (hopefully) find seat.
- read, or look out window while train alternately travels at speed slightly slower than I drive and stops at each station.
- exit at main station at destination.
- hail taxi or walk to destination (taxis are expensive)

Alternatively, I can get into my car and just drive to destination. This also includes lots of hassles (traffic, parking, etc.) but there is no train in Canada that can beat my car door-to-door that I know about. I have tried both and much prefer the car. I can also go when I want to go.... which allows me to dodge heavy traffic periods for some trips. I can also load the car with darned near anything I can close the doors on and no one hassles me. (g)

Additionally, many trips here are relatively traffic-free (big country).
