Here is one of my speculative theses: a lot of social problems are a result of boredom, and might be cured if people had better stocked minds and the means to entertain themselves without hindrance. Thus, for example, inventions like the VCR and the computer, as they become more widespread, are likely to decrease the level of thrill- seeking, malicious mischief, and dopey melodrama with which people fill their lives.......
