Given the near-unanimous response to the revival of this issue, I see no reason to believe in an incipient "cultural civil war" developing as a result. It simply is not important.

There is social pressure to conform in any number of areas, but there is a huge qualitative difference between social pressure and state-sponsored coercion. I knew children who would not say the Pledge almost 40 years ago, and there was no stigma, no singling out, no coercion (state-supported or otherwise).

BTW, according to the local television interviews with the father, the child involved is a Christian (as is her mother), and he wants the child left out of this as it is all about him, not her. Much ado about nothing.
