I don't agree that atheists are unceremoniously dissed and treated as alien. They may "feel" that way but I think a lot of that is self imposed.

We already HAVE a way of finding societal consensus - the ballot box. The instinct to fight comes along when some critical thinker in a robe robs us of our vote.

I think attention HAS focused on the idiot who brought the suit and the judge who made the ruling. I haven't heard many calls to round up the pesky atheists.

I think you have to make up your mind for yourself on whether this is a big deal. Frankly, the majority of people seem to think it IS a big deal. Your statement that the suit was ill-timed seems to suggest there should be another suit at a better time. People know this isn't the end of this and similar cases. There will be other suits of a similar nature. A lot of people are tired of giving an inch.

It is, of course, commendable to be considerate of everyone. Until some of them decide to dictate how you live your life.

If you don't think there is political suicide in this issue why has the overwhelming political response been one-sided?

BTW, is there more than one type of atheist? I have observed three. Probably there are others -

1. People who have thought about the concept of God and decided they don't believe and don't care to pretend they do and simply go on with their lives.

2. People who think they are so smart that nothing could possibly exist beyond their personal understanding - this type is quite willing to taunt and insult believers. Check out SI, esp. around Christmas time.

3. People who have serious issues with just about any kind of authority or establishment. The guy who brought this suit probably doesn't care squat about this issue other than the fact that he thinks he kicked some government butt.
He will sue again.
