I think that the depression era government was very efficient. Roosevelt was rolling out programs faster than the Republicans could line up opposition to them

Had not Roosevelt acted promptly in setting up soup kitchens nationwide several hundred thousand plus persons would have starved to death. The effectiveness and the quickness of programs that he thought up saved somewhere about a million lives.

But at the same time the Governor of Pennsylvania declared that no one in his state was starving and Federal aid was not needed. I believe that that was his last year in office, as food riots swirled around his office.

I think that the young people of Dave's age as well as Lizzie, have not seen the human suffering of the 30's and are apt to blow off Social Security as not needed.
