<I imagine airlifting steel is not terribly productive and not wonderfully efficient.>

Gidday Jay, airlifting steel is simply insane. That's a direct result of the taxes Bush is putting on imported steel and shows the economic disaster which such barriers can cause.

Uncle Al warned GeorgeW and co about the dangers of introducing steel trade barriers.

That is mistreatment of capital and will cause more capitalists to base their business in China. Uncle Al will have to wind back his US$ enterprise if the politicians destroy the economic foundations of the USA too much. The politicians will wonder why they don't have so many $$ to play with. They'll blame everyone but themselves. A bit like the irrationally exuberant, now suitably chastened, blame Uncle Al and the money supply instead of their own lack of judgement and understanding.

I wondered if $ill Gates might really throw a fit and simply say he was retiring from business, taking all his money and leaving for more friendly surroundings. That would have caused a stir in the USA capital markets. I bet he considered it.
