Loki...
A great game... I was a little surprised to see both Germany and Brazil come out so cautiously up until Brazil's first goal when they finally opened up. I have to say that perhaps this strategy was implemented due to Michael Ballack not being present... but that is mere speculation.
Germany was successful in neutralizing the Brazilians in the first half, although they had help from the Brazilians themselves who missed in a couple of occasions.
What surprised me is that although they succeeded in neutralizing Brazil, they did not go forward with the usual relentlessness of the German team I am familiar with (part of the reason why I had the score 3 x 2 Brazil in my prediction).
Nevertheless... I enjoyed the match as I did most of the tournament and for me that is exactly what I am after, regardless of whom I may be rooting for at any given moment in time. To me the most important thing is the game of football and the sportsmanship with which it is played. Today we saw good examples of both.
While not taking anything away from Brazil’s victory, I have to admit that it must be hard on those who were supporting the German team that it was a small error from one of the greatest goal keepers of all times that open the door for Brazil's victory.
I think that it was a decisive moment that made the difference. Ronaldo's two previous attempts were not effective, the first time by an error on Ronaldo's side, the second by Kahn's ability to stop it. Ironic that Ronaldo's error is now inconsequential, yet Kahn's error, made all the difference in that shot by Rivaldo. To Ronaldo's credit, he was alert and in the right place to take advantage of the situation.
Germany has nothing to be ashamed, they have a stellar record as their results clearly show... and much more... because I will never forget two pf the best matches I have seen in soccer, both played by Germany, in 66 in the final against England and in 70 in the semifinals in Mexico against Italy. True in both instances Germany lost to different rivals (England and Italy), but the image of great soccer players that fought like the best in regular time and over time (both games) will never be forgotten.
I for one, regard the German team in very high esteem. A tough competitor that plays very physical football, but clean. I can always count to watch a good game of football every time the German team is on the field.
As for "fans"... well, that's part of the show, pressures which are mishandled by those less fortunate... while unfortunate, it still goes to show that we as a human race still have lots to learn How can a mere game allow one to go to extremes, under the false pretenses of "patriotism", behave like a clown in an uncontrolled rage for... ??? what ?
Anyway... never mind that.
Once again, for me what matters is the game itself as it is referred to by Brazilians... "jogo bonito” and I have enjoyed every single World Cup tournament and no doubt will continue to do so in the future... I may even go "live" in the next cup in Germany.
I will be able to taste tons of great wine, beer and food. |
